After a childhood of being near art and artists, and after my formal education, I began to draw and paint for myself when I could but it was not enough to advance my work to a point that I felt worthy to share.
About 20 years ago I made a promise to myself to be ready to be a full time artist by the time I retired from my legal career. Fifteen years ago I began my early explorations into landscapes of cherished Truro and Provincetown memories. When I fully retired in 2016 I was ready to immerse myself and to become part of the arts community.
I became interested in the work of the artists from what became known as the Bay Area Figurative Movement as I found myself continually rendering the human figure irrespective of where the work began.
The human figure is the most powerful subject we have and to me is most satisfyingly expressed through what some refer to as the dialectic of the Appolonian and the Dionysian. Line, form and color are rendered, obscured, regenerated and removed until the course of the image is finished in the artist’s mind or heart, whichever is dominating at that moment. Nude or clothed, life drawing and figurative imaging in drawing and painting is an intense, personally demanding practice that brings joy in the search. With each effort I feel as if I am just beginning.
